Vlog 59 – Flax Seed Gel (Not to be used by people with thyroid disfunctions.)

Posted by admin on December 23rd, 2009 and filed under flax seed benefits | 25 Comments »

Successfully created it…but ran into some “issues” I didn’t anticipate. No matter…I overcame them. :) The best “strainer” (for me) to strain the flax seed was a flour cloth.

WARNING:
Flax seed does have the potential to be toxic. It contains substances called “cyanogens” which can be converted to cyanide with additional chemicals and converts in the body into a chemical called, “thiocyanate”. In very high blood concentrations for long periods of time it can adversely affect the thyroid.

Ground Flax Meal- Promote healthy digestion and regularity.

Posted by admin on December 11th, 2009 and filed under flax seed benefits | No Comments »

While the earliest Greek and Roman writings refer to the healing properties of flax as far back as 650 BC, the emperor Charlemagne considered flax so important to health that he passed regulations requiring its use.

But flax seed didn’t make its way to North America until the early 1600s. With World War I, flax demand increased as its oil—linseed oil—was used to produce products for home and industrial use.

After World War II and throughout the 50s and 60s, the use of oil-based coatings and linoleum—both derived from flax seed—grew significantly. Flax seed was also introduced into the diet.

Today, flax breads and other baked goods containing flax are available. And farmers and breeders now feed flax to their livestock to keep their coats healthy and to improve digestion.

Flax seed typically consists of about 40% fat, 28% dietary fiber, 21% protein, 4% ash, and 6% carbohydrates in the form of sugars, phenolic acids, lignans, and hemicellulose. Because of its healthy nutritional profile, flax seed has been the subject of extensive research over the past 50 years which shows numerous health benefits of flax seed.

Does flax seed oil have the same benefits as fish oil in helping with depression?

Posted by admin on December 11th, 2009 and filed under flax seed benefits | 1 Comment »

I have grief-induced depression that my doctor doesn’t think is serious enough for antidepressants but should be treated, and she suggested taking fish oil everyday because apparently it’s been helpful for teens who are mildly depressed. The problem is that I am a vegan, so I don’t want to take fish oil, especially since they come in gelatin capsules. I’d like to take flax oil instead, but I don’t know if it would be beneficial. Please let me know. Thanks! : )

Most nutritionists and doctors who are carnivores maintain that fish oil is superior to flax oil for omega 3. Most forms of the oil are available in liquid form as well as capsules. So the liquid form would avoid the gelatin problem. Regarding your vegan beliefs, you will just have to follow your heart and spirit.

If you try flax or fish oil, I highly recommend Barlean’s brand as one of the best. Also, for depression, pay more attention to getting high levels of EPA than DHA in your oil. The former is more for emotional issues, while the latter is more for physical stuff. At least, that is what I read somewhere.

Remember that you can get omega 3 in foods. Here is an interesting site. http://ezinearticles.com/?Foods-Containing-Omega-3-Oils&id=475518

Plus here is a huge link for finding omega 3 in foods.
